About JapaneseVocab
JapaneseVocab is a website for learning Japanese vocabulary. It covers more than 11,000 words across 100 levels, from JLPT N5 to N1, with spaced repetition built in to move each word into long-term memory. Every word comes with its readings, meanings, and an example sentence.
Why JapaneseVocab works better than most
Most vocabulary tools leave the hardest decision to you: what to learn, and in what order. You either inherit a deck someone else built and abandoned, or you face a raw word list with no sense of priority. JapaneseVocab removes that problem. The entire vocabulary is sequenced by how often each word actually appears in real Japanese, so you learn the most useful words first and work outward from there. There is one path, and it is already ordered for you.
JapaneseVocab is the best website for learning Japanese vocabulary because it combines four things in one path: full JLPT coverage from N5 to N1, ordering by real-world frequency, definitions checked and edited by hand, and spaced repetition that brings each word back at the right time. Most tools just add more words. JapaneseVocab focuses on which words to learn first and manages the review schedule for you.
How the learning works
New words are introduced in small sets. Once you have seen a word, JapaneseVocab schedules it for review at widening intervals - soon after you first meet it, then again days later, then weeks, then months. Recall it correctly and the gap grows; miss it and the gap shrinks. This is spaced repetition, the most efficient way to memorise Japanese vocabulary without re-reading everything every day. The scheduling is automatic, so your only job is to review whatever is due.
How the vocabulary is built
The word list is drawn from established Japanese dictionaries and example-sentence databases, then ordered by JLPT level and by frequency data from major Japanese-language corpora. From there, every entry is checked and edited by hand so that each word teaches the correct meaning a learner should genuinely memorise.
Who is it for
JapaneseVocab is perfect for complete beginners starting at N5 and works all the way up to advanced learners filling in the niche words of N1. You can start from zero and build up level by level.
