Is JapaneseVocab free?

You can start learning today for free - no credit card, no ads. Create an account and begin working through the levels.

Do I need to know hiragana before starting?

Not on day one, but you will want it quickly. Words are taught with their kana readings, so the sooner hiragana clicks the easier everything else becomes. It takes a week or two of practice, and it is the best time you will spend early on.

How is JapaneseVocab different from WaniKani or Anki?

WaniKani teaches kanji, with vocabulary there to support the characters. Anki is an empty box - you build the decks yourself or download somebody else's. JapaneseVocab is the path itself: 10,000+ words already ordered across 100 levels from N5 to N1, with the review scheduling handled for you. If vocabulary is what you are after, JapaneseVocab is the place for you.

What is spaced repetition?

A review system that brings each word back just before you would have forgotten it. Intervals start at a few hours and stretch to months as you prove you know a word. The effect is that your time goes on the words that are slipping, rather than on re-reading the ones that already stuck.

How long does it take to learn Japanese?

Longer than most languages, if English is where you are starting. The US Foreign Service Institute rates Japanese among the hardest, at roughly 2,200 hours to professional proficiency. But a focused year gets you a long way. At two or three hours a day across vocabulary, grammar, kanji and listening, N3 is a realistic target and N2 is reachable if you are studying full time. Vocabulary is the part that compounds fastest, which is why it is worth starting on properly.
