Frequently asked questions

Is JapaneseVocab free?

Yes, you can start learning today for free. No credit card, no ads, and no catch - just create an account and begin working through the levels.

Do I need to know hiragana before starting?

Not on day one, but you will want it quickly. Words are taught with their kana readings, so learning hiragana in your first week or two makes everything easier - and it only takes a few days of practice.

How is JapaneseVocab different from WaniKani or Anki?

WaniKani teaches kanji, with vocabulary there to support the characters. Anki is a blank system where you build or download your own decks. JapaneseVocab is a ready-made vocabulary path: 10,000+ words ordered across 100 levels from N5 to N1, with the spaced repetition built in. If your goal is vocabulary, the whole journey is in one place.

What is spaced repetition?

A review system that shows you each word right before you would forget it. Intervals start at hours and stretch to months as you prove you know a word, until it is locked into long-term memory. It is the most efficient way we know of to memorise large amounts of vocabulary.

Can I really become fluent in a year?

Vocabulary is the biggest single ingredient of fluency, and learning around 30 words a day with daily reviews takes you through all 10,000+ words in about a year. You will still want grammar and listening practice alongside, but with 10,000 words, real Japanese opens up.
